# How to get a YouTube transcript

> On desktop YouTube, expand the description and click Show transcript. Or paste the URL above and take the words with you.

You need a caption track either way. If the video has none, neither YouTube nor this page can invent one.

## On this page

1. Paste the YouTube URL.
2. Press Get transcript.
3. Copy the text, or download TXT, SRT, VTT, or JSON.

## On desktop YouTube

Show transcript sits under the description, not on the CC button. You can read the cues. You don't get a file.

1. Open the video in a desktop browser.
2. Expand the description.
3. Click Show transcript.

## Why this page instead of YouTube's panel
